CAF hosts elite referees in Cairo for pre-Afcon high-performance training

By Dayo Awoniyi

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has convened a select group of the continent’s top referees for an intensive high-performance training camp in Cairo, Egypt, scheduled to run from November 8 to 13.

The programme forms part of CAF’s strategic efforts to strengthen officiating standards ahead of major continental tournaments, including the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) set to begin in December.

Among the referees invited are Peter Waweru (Kenya), Omar Artan (Somalia), Daniel Laryea (Ghana), Dahane Beida (Mauritania), Mustapha Ghorbal (Algeria), Abongile Tom (South Africa), Amin Omar (Egypt), and Issa Sy (Senegal). They will be joined by other top officials recognized for their consistency and professionalism across CAF competitions.

According to CAF, the camp will focus on enhancing fitness, game interpretation, and decision-making under pressure, combining theoretical lessons with on-field simulations to replicate real match conditions and ensure the uniform application of the Laws of the Game.

The referees will also receive updates on the latest FIFA and CAF regulations and further guidance on the effective use of VAR (Video Assistant Referee) technology.

CAF emphasized that the initiative underscores its broader commitment to improving refereeing quality across Africa and ensuring fair play, transparency, and integrity in all competitions.

The Cairo camp will serve as a crucial preparation platform for officials likely to be shortlisted for AFCON 2025, reinforcing CAF’s vision of developing world-class refereeing talent across the continent.
