William Troost-Ekong, the captain of Nigeria’s national football team, has voiced his support for having indigenous coaches lead the Super Eagles.
This call comes after the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) failed to finalize an agreement with Bruno Labbadia, leading to Augustine Eguavoen taking charge of the team.
Troost-Ekong believes that having a Nigerian coach who understands the cultural and traditional aspects of Nigerian football would be beneficial, emphasizing that a coach with experience in Nigerian football can better relate to the players and their experiences, which can positively impact the team’s performance.
“I’ve always said that having a coach from Nigeria is an advantage. Someone who has been in our shoes and understands what we’re going through can bring that experience to the team,” Troost-Ekong told the Press in Uyo.
The Super Eagles captain recently made a move to Saudi Arabian club Al-Kholood from PAOK in Greece. He also had a standout performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), where he was named MVP and scored three goals in six games.
