CHAN 2024: Eric Chelle calls for mental reset after Nigeria fall in Group D opener

By Dayo Awoniyi

Nigeria’s 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) campaign began on a sour note as the home-based Super Eagles were narrowly beaten 1-0 by defending champions Senegal in their Group D opener on Tuesday at the Amani Stadium in Tanzania.

A solitary second-half strike from Senegalese defender Christian Gomis proved to be the difference in a tightly contested match, where neither team truly found their attacking rhythm.

Despite showing some moments of promise, Nigeria struggled to impose themselves on the game and lacked the mental and physical sharpness required to take control.

In his post-match interview, head coach Eric Chelle did not hold back, identifying key areas that need urgent improvement.

The Malian tactician emphasized the need for a stronger mindset, increased competitiveness, and more aggression from his players, warning that without these qualities, Nigeria’s hopes of advancing past the group stage will be in jeopardy.

“This was a wake-up call,” Chelle admitted. “We must adapt quickly to the demands of the CHAN if we want to survive in this tournament.”

Nigeria currently sits third in Group D, with their next match against Sudan now looming large. Anything less than a win in that fixture could severely impact their chances of reaching the knockout stages.

The group phase will conclude with a tough encounter against Congo, a team capable of causing surprises.

Chelle and his coaching staff are expected to make tactical adjustments while reinforcing the need for mental discipline and fighting spirit as Nigeria looks to bounce back and revive their tournament hopes.
