Nigeria senior women’s national team goalkeeper, Chiamaka Nnadozie has attributed the team’s 0-0 draw with Canada to determination.
The Super Falcons opened its 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup campaign with an impressive goalless draw against reigning Olympic champions, Canada on Friday.
Canada were largely in control, dominating possession but failed to create chances of quality from open play, while Nigeria chose their moments carefully, opening up to counter-attack.
However, the Paris FC goalkeeper won the Player-of-the-Match award after she saved Canada captain, Christine Sinclair’s penalty in the second half.
“I don’t really know what to say,” Nnadozie said after the match.
“Right now, I am so emotional. It was an amazing game. I don’t know the word to use. Determination did it for us.
“Canadians are the Olympic champions and we were determined to do this. Hard work, consistency, trust, confidence, and belief in ourselves as a team helped us get the result.”
The former Rivers Angels save hands was chosen as stand-in captain in the absence of Onome Ebi who started on the bench and she rewarded the coach’s confidence in her with a superb display.
Up next for Nigeria is another acid test against co-hosts, Australia.
