Chidiebere Nwakali Aims for Norwegian Goal of the Season Honors

By Johnny Edward:
Sogndal midfielder Chidiebere Nwakali expresses his delight at being nominated for the Norwegian Eliteserien Goal of the Season Award for 2017. His stunning 25-yard strike against Molde in October has placed him in contention alongside other contenders, including Nicklas Bendtner and Aleksander Melgalvis. Nwakali remains hopeful of clinching the prestigious award, the winner of which will be announced at the Football Festival on Monday, November 27.
“I’m happy my goal was nominated, and I hope I get to win it,” Nwakali conveyed in an interview.
Despite not featuring in Sogndal Fotball’s recent 1-1 draw against Stabaek, Nwakali is optimistic about his team’s chances to secure the relegation play-off spot on the final day of the Norwegian Eliteserien league this Sunday. Sogndal Fotball currently occupies the 15th position in the 16-team log with 29 points from 29 games, sharing the same point tally with 14th-placed Aalesund but with fewer goals scored.
“It’s going to be tough, but we just need to win our last game with more goals and hope that Strømsgodset also achieve their dream of qualifying for the Europa League with a win against Aalesund,” Nwakali stated.
On loan at Sogndal from Manchester City, the 20-year-old midfielder has showcased his talent with three goals in 25 appearances. As the season concludes, Nwakali’s aspirations extend beyond individual recognition to aiding his team’s escape from relegation in the competitive Norwegian Eliteserien.
