Chidozie Awaziem speaks out against discrimination after abuse in CONCACAF match

By Dayo Awoniyi

Nigerian defender Chidozie Awaziem has spoken out after being subjected to abusive language during Colorado Rapids’ CONCACAF Champions Cup match against Los Angeles FC on Wednesday.

Awaziem took to social media to share his experience, stating, “During last night’s Concacaf Champions Cup match, I believe I was subjected to abusive language on the field—something I have never experienced from another player before.”

He immediately reported the incident to his teammates and the match officials, highlighting the importance of maintaining standards against discrimination.

“Concacaf has been clear with its ‘What’s Wrong is Wrong’ campaign, making it clear that discrimination has no place in our sport. As players, we need to know these standards are upheld and that we’re protected on the field,” Awaziem explained.

The defender expressed his hope that governing bodies would take action against both players and fans who use discriminatory language, saying, “My hope is that the governing bodies of the sport continue to hold players and fans accountable for discriminatory language, to foster an environment that protects and respects players of all races and cultural backgrounds.”

Awaziem also expressed gratitude for the support of his club, teammates, and others involved as the investigation into the incident continues.

“I appreciate the support of my club, my teammates, and everyone involved as this matter is investigated further,” he added.

In response, Colorado Rapids issued a statement condemning the alleged abusive language and reaffirmed their zero-tolerance stance on abuse, standing firmly with Awaziem.
