Cucurella outshines Yamal as Real Madrid win first Clasico
Real Madrid claimed a 2-1 victory over rivals Barcelona at Spotify Camp Nou on Sunday, with Mark Cucurella playing a central role in keeping Lamine Yamal quiet.
According to Sport, Jose Mourinho’s side arrived with a clear defensive plan, assigning Cucurella to man-mark Yamal. The Real Madrid defender stayed close to the Barcelona winger and used considerable physicality to limit his influence.
Cucurella also made an important contribution at the other end of the pitch shortly before half-time. He produced an impressive attacking move which ended with Kylian Mbappe scoring, after Gerard Martin failed to clear the ball effectively.
His defensive display was one of the main reasons for Real Madrid’s resilience, as he successfully restricted the threat posed by Yamal throughout the contest.
Yamal appealed to referee Martinez Munuera in the 32nd minute after Cucurella held him clearly. He asked for the Real Madrid player to be shown a yellow card, pointing out that it was not the first foul Cucurella had committed against him.
The Barcelona player was visibly frustrated when Cucurella escaped punishment, an incident which also attracted attention in coverage of the match.
The contest carried added significance because of comments made by Yamal when Cucurella’s move to Real Madrid was officially announced. Speaking to the Tiempo de Juego programme on Cadena COPE while discussing the 2026 World Cup, Yamal was also asked about Cucurella joining Real Madrid.
“I told him he would start the first match, but in the second he would sit on the bench because I would devour him,” Yamal said at the time.
Cucurella’s performance in the first Clasico between the pair provided a decisive response. He imposed himself on Yamal, frustrated Barcelona’s attacking threat and helped Real Madrid secure the victory.
