Daniel Amokachi’s absence causes uproar ahead of South Africa clash

By Monsurah Olatunji
The Nigeria’s senior men’s national team camp is experiencing tension as Daniel Amokachi remains absent, with the 2026 World Cup qualifier against South Africa only a few days away.
Amokachi’s absence has sparked questions regarding his position as one of Finidi George’s assistant coaches.
After being appointed as the head coach of the senior national team, Finidi selected his 1994 Super Eagles teammate Amokachi as one of his assistants, with Olatunji Baruwa retaining his role as the goalkeepers’ trainer, a position he held under former coach Jose Peseiro.
It is recalled that the President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Ibrahim Gusau, has canceled salaries of assistant coaches in all the national teams, stating they will now be paid “invitational allowance” instead, as part of cost-cutting measures following the country’s harsh economic conditions.
Although no official statement has been made regarding Amokachi’s resignation, reports suggest that the former Super Eagles star is not interested in taking a non-paid appointment.
Nigerian football photojournalist, Tobi Adepoju, tweeted in accordance with this rumor, stating that the assistant manager is displeased with the contract offered by the NFF, which is why he has decided to miss the upcoming fixture against South Africa.
While details of the contract have not been made public, Amokachi’s absence appears linked to his rejection of the terms offered.
This development has added to the uncertainty and tension within the Super Eagles camp as they prepare for the crucial match against South Africa at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.
