David Bettoni captures the tactical moment in the latest issue of 24hfootnews, available in kiosks and on our online store. The opportunity to come back to his vision of the job of coach.
On his vocation as a coach
“When I joined the Cannes training center at 16/17 years old, my coaches quickly told me: “You will become a youth coach fairly quickly”. They told me that, because I was very serious, very disciplined, I pulled others and I talked a lot. I did that naturally. While outside the field, I did not speak. Throughout my career, I thought about it. I had the click when I was in Italy, at 26 years old. I spent six years in Italy in second and third division clubs. When I saw the coaches working, I understood that I was going to become a coach. I understood very quickly, I managed to understand how the coaches conveyed their messages. I still kept the French essence, that is to say, keep the ball and play. In Italy, everything was very defensive. When I tasted the culture of work and the culture of play, I said to myself: “After my career, I want to become a coach”.
On the differences between deputy and number one
“It’s about taking responsibility. This is what I want today. I’m not going to change my way of coaching. I know exactly what a player wants to hear. I know exactly how a president works. I think I have an important quality for a coach: I am very resilient to pressure. The difference between resilience and managing pressure is that managing pressure is ad hoc. Resilience is over time. I have this thing. Being number one means taking responsibility. I know how to improve my players. And I like that they progress. We are here for that. I want to bring my personal touch to a team. I don’t want to go anywhere. I want to sign for a club that will suit me because I also want to convey emotions. I want to be a coach for these three things: to take my responsibilities, to bring to the players and to generate emotion. It’s already not bad, it’s not easy. »
