Dennerby Backs Super Falcons, Fitness Coach Karlsson for WAFCON 2024 glory

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

Former Super Falcons head coach Thomas Dennerby has thrown his weight behind Nigeria’s senior women’s national team and their returning fitness coach, Per Karlsson, as the team intensifies preparations for the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.

Karlsson, a Swedish fitness expert and former hammer throw athlete, was recently reappointed to the Falcons’ technical crew by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF). He previously served under Dennerby during Nigeria’s victorious 2018 WAFCON campaign in Ghana and their historic Round of 16 finish at the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup in France—the team’s first progression beyond the group stage in two decades.

Dennerby, who led the Falcons during both tournaments, publicly welcomed the development in a Facebook post, writing: “Per Karlsson (PK), the one and only. Go Nigeria.”

Karlsson has since joined the Falcons’ training camp as the team prepares for two international friendlies against a Central African opponent and long-time rivals Cameroon. The first match is scheduled for May 31 in Ikenne, with the second leg taking place on June 3 in Abeokuta.

Nigeria will face Tunisia, Algeria, and Botswana in Group B of the 2024 WAFCON, as they seek to reclaim the continental title later this year in Morocco.
