DStv issues important update on AFCON 2025 broadcasts amid geo-blocking measures

DStv has issued an important update for football fans ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025, scheduled to take place from 21 December 2025 to 18 January 2026, warning that some Free-to-Air (FTA) channels may be temporarily unavailable in certain regions during the tournament.

According to a statement from the pay-TV operator to customers, the temporary restrictions are part of CAF’s broadcast licensing requirements. The process, known as geo-blocking, is standard practice in international sports broadcasting and ensures that matches are aired only in the territories where broadcasters hold exclusive rights.

“Due to CAF’s broadcast licensing requirements, some FTA channels carried on our service will be temporarily unavailable outside their respective home countries throughout the tournament,” DStv said.

“This ensures compliance with contractual agreements and protects our customers and partners from potential legal breaches.”

Subscribers with SuperSport included in their DStv or GOtv packages will continue to enjoy full coverage of the tournament without interruption, the company confirmed.

The restrictions are linked to the territorial nature of broadcast rights granted by CAF. Rights holders often limit coverage to specific countries, and broadcasters must enforce these limitations to remain compliant.

DStv said it is finalising details with affected FTA broadcasters and will provide further updates ahead of the tournament. The operator encouraged subscribers to verify that their package includes SuperSport to avoid missing any of the action.

The broadcaster concluded by thanking customers for their understanding and continued support as preparations for AFCON 2025 continue.
