Edo Queens to battle for first ever CAF Women’s Champions League title in Morocco

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

The 2024 CAF Women’s Champions League is shaping up to be an exciting tournament, with Edo Queens representing Nigeria as they look to take home the continental title.

Set to take place in Morocco from November 9 to 23, the competition will feature eight top club teams from across Africa, all vying for the prestigious title and the generous prize money.

Morocco is making a return as the host nation, having successfully organized the tournament in 2022. The host team, AS FAR FC, claimed the title that year, adding to the intensity and local pride surrounding this event.

Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies, from South Africa, are the defending champions and the most successful club in the tournament’s history with two titles. They will be one of the favorites to defend their crown, alongside other strong teams like AS FAR FC and perhaps the newly crowned Nigerian champions, Edo Queens.

Alongside Edo Queens, other participants include teams like Aigles de La Medina from Senegal, University of the Western Cape from South Africa, Tutankhamun from Egypt, Commercial Bank of Ethiopia, and TP Mazembe from the Democratic Republic of Congo.

With a total prize pool that includes $400,000 for the winners and $250,000 for the runners-up, the competition promises to showcase the best of African women’s club football, and it will be a thrilling spectacle for football fans across the continent.

It will be interesting to see how Edo Queens, fresh off their NWFL Premiership and WAFU-B triumphs, fare in this highly competitive environment!
