Enyimba fight back to overcome Abia Warriors in thrilling Oriental derby

By: Dayo Awoniyi

Enyimba International Stadium in Aba was the venue for an exhilarating Oriental derby, where Enyimba came from behind to secure a 2-1 victory over Abia Warriors, ending their rivals’ three-match winning streak.

The Warriors took an early lead in the 21st minute through Anthony Ijoma, who netted his ninth league goal of the season.

However, Enyimba responded strongly, with former Warriors captain Kalu Nweke leveling the score in the 35th minute with a beautifully curved shot that left the goalkeeper rooted to the spot.

The second half saw Abia Warriors dominate possession, but it was Enyimba’s talisman, Joseph Atule, who turned the game in the hosts’ favor.

Atule fired in a powerful shot from outside the box in the 66th minute to give Enyimba a 2-1 lead.

Despite a late surge from the Warriors, Enyimba’s defense held firm, ensuring they secured all three points. This victory, in the Matchday 32 fixture of the Nigeria Premier Football League, was a vital one for Enyimba as they continue their push for a strong finish to the season.

Abia Warriors, who have now suffered their first defeat in four matches, will look to bounce back in their next fixture when they host Rivers United.
