Erasmus Onu proud of Abia Warriors campaign despite missing NPFL Super Six
By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde
Head Coach of Abia Warriors, Erasmus Onu believes his players performed excellently well during the 2022/2023 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) regular season despite narrowly missing out on the Super Six.
The Umuahia-based side didn’t qualify for the Super Six on inferior goal difference despite a 2-0 win over Doma United at home in the last game of the regular season.
Goals from Emmanuel Onu and Sunday Megwo lifted the host to a 2-0 win but Sunshine Stars’ 3-0 win against Dakkada FC ended Abia Warriors’ Super Six dreams.
Onu is upbeat about his team’s performance and remained unmoved by his inability to make it to the Super Six.
“It’s unfortunate that we didn’t qualify for the Super Six. At the beginning of the league we were leading but some unfortunate things happened because of the competition which I am not in the mood to talk about for now. Maybe at the appropriate time, I will talk a little about it.” Onu told Brila FM.
“I am not feeling bad. I know everyone looking at the table knows that we have done our best.
“The difference between the team and the table toppers were not much. I am okay and I think my boys have done a very wonderful job.”
Akure-based side and Abia Warriors finished the regular season tied on 27 points but Sunshine Stars made it to the season-ending Super Six on superior goal difference.
The Akure Gunners dispatched Dakkada FC 3-0 thanks to goals from Michael Olulasi, Achi Nnaemeka, and Ekerette Udom.
