Eric Chelle Demands Salary Increase to Remain Super Eagles Coach

Head coach of the Nigeria national football team, Eric Chelle, has reportedly requested a substantial salary increase as a condition for continuing in his role.

Sources within the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) say the Franco-Malian tactician is seeking a monthly salary of $100,000, a figure that would represent an increase of more than 80 per cent on his current remuneration since taking charge of the Super Eagles.

Chelle’s demand follows Nigeria’s impressive outing at the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, where the Super Eagles finished third to claim the bronze medal. His attacking philosophy and expansive style of play during the tournament earned plaudits from fans and pundits, sparking calls for the NFF to retain him despite differing opinions over his reported salary request.

The NFF has played down speculation linking Chelle with a move to Olympique de Marseille, amid rumours of an 18-month contract offer from the Ligue 1 side. However, several African national teams are believed to be monitoring his situation closely following Nigeria’s strong showing at the continental tournament.

Sources further indicate that a failure to agree on improved terms could push Chelle to explore alternative opportunities elsewhere.

Neither the NFF nor Chelle has publicly commented on the ongoing discussions. Negotiations are expected to continue as the federation weighs financial realities against the need for stability and continuity ahead of upcoming international competitions.

Chelle signed a two-year contract with Nigeria in 2024, with one year remaining on his current deal.
