Esther Michael recounts uneasy Confluence Queens’ NWFL Super Six qualification
By Wale Mustapha
Esther Michael has revealed the secret behind his side’s remarkable turnaround following their successful qualification to the Nigeria Women’s Football League Premiership Super Six tournament.
The Lokoja side were held to a 0-0 draw by Nasarawa Amazons at the Confluence Stadium last Wednesday but the lone point was enough to guarantee their qualification to the Super Six finals with a game to spare.
Despite failing to see a win in opening three matches, Whyte Ogbonda’s side bounced back to record in incredible nine-match unbeaten streak to seal their qualification and the Confluence Queens legend attributed the feat to sheer determination and luck, while heaping praises on the management and players for their commitment.
“It was not an easy season for us, when we started, many people have even count us out of the Super Six, some have tipped us among the clubs that will relegate but we kept pushing and believing in ourselves and also banking on God’s grace on our side, we were able to make it happen,” Michael told NigeriaFootball.ng.
“We thank God for the management for the wisdom and leadership to encourage the team when the morale was down, I am happy for the technical crew led by Coach Whyte Ogbonda, he’s a great tactician. Despite the rough start, he kept the promise that we will make it (to Super Six) that how we started does not matter but the end.”
Asked of her side’s chances at the Super Six, Michael expressed believe in her team’s qualities adding that the Lokoja based side would give it all to win the playoffs.
“I’d like you to allow us savor this qualification before talking about the Super Six, we still have a game to end the regular season but I’m confident in the team we have,” she continued.
“I’m sure when its time we will live up to expectations, with more work and by God’s grace we will come back with the cup.”
Confluence Queens finished first runner up in the 2019 playoffs when they lost 1-0 to Rivers Angels in the final played in Lagos.
