In a captivating encounter at the Estádio Marcolino de Castro, Super Eagles midfielder Oghenekaro Etebo demonstrated his prowess, netting a crucial goal for Feirense. However, it proved insufficient to secure victory as Feirense succumbed to a narrow 3-2 defeat at the hands of Sporting Lisbon in the Portuguese top-tier clash on Friday night.
Etebo’s stellar performance marked his second goal in five league appearances for Feirense this season, the previous being on August 21, when he contributed to a 2-1 home triumph against Pacos De Ferreira.
Sporting Lisbon seized control of the match with precision, with Sebastian Coates and Bruno Fernandes finding the net in the 62nd and 64th minutes, respectively. Joao Silva rallied Feirense’s spirits, reducing the deficit to 2-1 with a goal in the 69th minute.
Etebo’s indomitable spirit shone through in the 80th minute, as he orchestrated an impressive comeback for Feirense, leveling the score at 2-2. However, Sporting Lisbon managed to clinch the victory with Bas Dost’s successful penalty kick in the 97th minute.
As the clock wound down, Etebo made way for Luis Rocha in the 90th minute. The valiant effort from the Feirense side ultimately left them in sixth place with eight points in the 18-team league.
Prior to this fixture, Etebo showcased his skills on the international stage, featuring for the Super Eagles in the second leg Group B 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Cameroon, which culminated in a 1-1 draw in Yaoundé on Monday. Etebo took the field in the second half, replacing Ogenyi Onazi, and played a pivotal role in the contest.
