FIFA World Cup: Former Nigeria forward Ijeh decries African outings in Qatar

Peter Ijeh, former Super Eagles’ striker has expressed displeasure with how African teams started their campaigns at the ongoing FIFA World Cup in Qatar saying its not a reflection of the continent’s quality.
The five African representatives could not record a single win in their opening group games in the competition as Senegal were able bring back the believe with their commanding 3-1 win over hosts Qatar on Friday.
The Teranga Lions side will now need to beat Ecuador in their last group game to seal a place in the last 16, while Tunisia however face elimination from the competition after they suffered a narrow 1-0 loss to Australia as the Carthage Eagles are bottom of Group D with one point from two games.
Ijeh opined that the African teams have not done enough at the mundial calling for quick resolve to up their performances which could make or mar the image of African football.
“The African teams have not shown enough character as much as we used to see in the past, it is unfortunate,” Ijeh told media.
“What we are seeing from them its not about the quality of African football quality, so they need to step up and muster good results to get them to next round as it will tell on the continent.”
Morocco will be in action against Belgium on Sunday while Cameroon and Ghana have a dates with Serbia and South Korea on Monday.
