By Dayo Awoniyi

Nigeria’s U20 men’s national team, the Flying Eagles, have departed Abuja for Chile to commence a 12-day final training camp ahead of the 24th FIFA U20 World Cup finals.

A 20-man squad and 11 officials flew out of Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport on Sunday evening aboard Turkish Airlines to Istanbul before connecting to Santiago.

Midfield enforcer Daniel Daga is expected to join the team directly from his base in Norway.

Group F Schedule in Talca

The seven-time African champions will play all their Group F matches at the Estadio Fiscal in Talca, about 250 kilometres from Santiago.

  • 29 September: Nigeria vs Norway

  • 2 October: Nigeria vs Saudi Arabia

  • 5 October: Nigeria vs Colombia

The Flying Eagles had been in camp in Abuja for several weeks, fine-tuning their strategies before their departure.

Nigeria’s Quest for First Global Crown

Nigeria reached the semi-finals of the last edition in Argentina, narrowly losing to Korea Republic after extra time. The Flying Eagles are still seeking a first-ever U20 world title, having finished as runners-up in 1989 (Saudi Arabia) and 2005 (Netherlands).

Since debuting in 1977 as the FIFA World Youth Tournament, the competition has grown into one of FIFA’s most prestigious youth events. The 2025 finals will be staged across Santiago, Rancagua, Valparaiso, and Talca.

  • Group C: Brazil, Mexico, Morocco, Spain

  • Group D: Italy, Australia, Cuba, Argentina
