Flying Eagles Edge Capital City FC in friendly Ahead of WAFU-B U20 Championship

By Dayo Awoniyi

Nigeria’s U20 men’s national team, the Flying Eagles, secured a 2-1 victory over Capital City FC in a warm-up match held in Abuja, as part of their preparations for the upcoming 2025 WAFU U20 Championship in Ghana.

The friendly provided Head Coach Aliyu Zubairu with a valuable opportunity to assess his squad’s readiness ahead of the regional tournament.

While the Flying Eagles dominated proceedings, they were only able to convert two of several chances created — a detail the technical crew will be keen to fine-tune in the coming days.

The WAFU U20 Championship serves as a qualifying tournament for the 2025 FIFA U20 World Cup in Chile, where Nigeria remains the only West African nation to have secured qualification.

Coach Zubairu is expected to finalize his 23-man squad shortly, with competition heating up for a place on the team.

Nigeria has been drawn in Group A alongside hosts Ghana and the Benin Republic. The Flying Eagles will open their campaign on July 10 against Ghana, before taking on Benin Republic on July 13 in their final group match.

With their eyes firmly set on continental glory and global representation, the Flying Eagles will be looking to maintain momentum and sharpen their edge as they prepare to take the WAFU U20 Championship by storm.
