Former Nigeria internationals lead race to replace Jose Peseiro as Super Eagles coach

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

Two former Nigeria internationals are favorites to take over the reins as Super Eagles coach in coming days after the expiration of Jose Peseiro’s contract.

Enyimba FC coach and former international, Finidi George is one of the top candidates to replace Peseiro as the manager of the three-time African champions.

Finidi’s former teammate and another ex-international, Emmanuel Amunike is also one of the favoured candidates for the Super Eagles top job.

Peseiro’s contract with the West African giants will expire at the end of this month, June.

According to ESPN, the Portuguese coach would be asked to take a pay cut if he is to remain as the team handler.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is expected to offer Finidi or Amunike the job if Peseiro decides to walk away at the end of this month.

Finidi recently led Enyimba to the 2022/2023 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) title and is one of Peseiro’s assistants with the Super Eagles.

Amunike, on his part has served as assistant coach with the 1980 African champions after leading the national U-17 team to the World Cup title in 2015.

He has also guided Tanzania to qualify for the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) with stints in Sudan, Egypt, and recently Zambia.
