With few weeks to the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, the reality of Nigeria’s absence is becoming clearer by the day.
Former Nigeria international, Victor Agali blamed the immediate past administration of Nigerian football for the handling of the whole process that led to the sack of former Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr at a time when the Franco-German coach was still on course for the World Cup qualification.
“The management at that time took a drastic decision as we couldn’t qualify for the FIFA World Cup. It was the wrong time to get Eguavoen involved. Gernot Rohr was still on course with the qualification,” Agali said on Brila FM.
“No matter how bad the team is playing, the role of the coach is to qualify the team and have the time to adjust. The whole country is suffering from the team not qualifying for the World Cup. “The team has problems defensively but offensively, we still have a good team.”
Gernot Rohr guided Nigeria to the top of Group C of Africa World Cup Qualifiers Second Stage with 13 points, two points ahead of Cape Verde, seven points better than Liberia, and nine points ahead of Central Africa Republic before his sack.
Augustine Eguavoen was appointed in an interim capacity and led Nigeria to a Round of 16 exit at the last African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cameroon despite winning all three group games.
The head of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Technical Department alongside former International, Emmanuel Amunike were in charge of the Super Eagles as the team lost on away goals to the Black Stars of Ghana in the World Cup Playoffs which ensured that Nigeria won’t participate at this year’s FIFA World Cup.
Portuguese coach, Jose Peseiro had since been appointed as the team coach. The team has won two out of five games since the appointment of Jose Peseiro as Head Coach.
