Francisca Ordega Confirms Injury Blow Ahead of WAFCON 2024 Final

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

Veteran Nigeria’s senior women’s national team forward Francisca Ordega has confirmed she will miss the final of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) due to injury.

The experienced winger, who is chasing her fifth WAFCON title, made the announcement via her social media platforms, expressing deep emotion and unwavering optimism.

“Injured? Yes. Sad? Yes. But one thing is sure — giving up is not an option. I will be back stronger and better.”

Ordega revealed she has been managing an injury for several days which has ruled her out of Nigeria’s campaign in the latter stages of the tournament. Despite her absence on the pitch, she remains a vocal leader and motivator within the team.

“God’s plans are the best. Injuries come when you least expect them. For some days now, I’ve been nursing an injury that has kept me out of the tournament. Nothing hurts more than sitting on the sidelines watching others do what you love most.

“But as a professional footballer, I take every setback as a blessing. I will be back stronger and better. And in between, I’m trusting God to claim my fifth WAFCON title tomorrow.”

Super Falcons head coach Justin Madugu, in his pre-match briefing, acknowledged Ordega’s absence due to a knock sustained during training, describing it as a “sad development” but expressed confidence in the rest of the squad to rise to the occasion.

As the Super Falcons prepare to face host nation Morocco in Saturday’s highly anticipated final in Rabat, Ordega’s presence will continue to inspire her teammates from the sidelines as Nigeria aims for a ecord-extending 10th continental crown.
