Fulham agrees fee with Ajax on Calvin Bassey’s move to England

By Monsurah Olatunji

Fulham and Ajax have reportedly agreed on a deal that will allow Nigeria defender, Calvin Bassey move to England.
The 23-year-old moved to the Dutch giants last year after two years at Rangers, where he made 65 appearances in total, winning the league title in 2021 and the Scottish Cup the following year.
However, the Nigerian has been at the center of criticism since joining the team and transfer speculations since the start of the window.
The talented defender has struggled to replicate his best form in the Netherlands, with Ajax failing to secure a Champions League spot last season for the first time in over a decade.
However, he made 39 appearances, scoring one goal and providing five assists.
Bassey, who has four years left on his current contract, had also attracted interest from Brighton, but the defender is keen to see out his contract with Ajax, as reported earlier this week, but he’s now open to leaving the club after the club informed him of their willingness to allow him to leave this summer.
Fulham were reported to have made an opening bid of more than £17m earlier this week but the North London club are reported to have reached a transfer fee of around £21m with Ajax for the 22-year-old.
The agreed fee is close to the same amount that Ajax paid to Rangers for Bassey last year but the deal remains subject to personal terms.
A resale percentage option is also included in the deal, which will see Ajax still earn from Bassey in the future.
Speaking on Bassey’s future Ajax manager, Maurice Steijn told Dutch daily, Telegraaf, “I told Calvin Bassey it would be better to leave Ajax.
“Also because of the money. When he leaves — we can strengthen the squad properly. I have told him this honestly.”
