Gianfranco Zola expresses disappointment in Osimhen’s move to Galatasaray

Former Chelsea star Gianfranco Zola has voiced his disappointment with Victor Osimhen’s decision to join Galatasaray on a season-long loan, especially when compared to Paulo Dybala’s transfer choices.
Osimhen, who was rumoured to be close to a deal with Chelsea, opted for Galatasaray after rejecting a loan move to Chelsea due to disagreements over a pay cut.
Zola, who enjoyed a celebrated career at Chelsea from 1996 to 2003, had previously praised Osimhen’s abilities and expressed a strong desire to see him join the Blues.
“I rate Osimhen as one of the top strikers at the moment, given his energy, scoring ability, and playmaking skills. I’m confident he could have been a success in the Premier League,” Zola remarked on the ObiOne Podcast last year. “A player of his quality would have made a significant positive impact at Chelsea.”
Zola, who scored 80 goals and provided 38 assists during his time at Chelsea, was hopeful that Osimhen would follow a similar path, yet he is disappointed by Osimhen’s decision to move to the Turkish league.
In an interview with Il Corriere dello Sport, Zola contrasted Osimhen’s move with Dybala’s decision to stay with his heart rather than opting for a financially motivated transfer. “One story is heartwarming, while the other is less inspiring,” Zola said. “Dybala’s choice was guided by his passion for the game, which resonates more deeply with football fans.”
Zola’s reflection shows his belief that Osimhen’s choice, driven by financial incentives, lacks the inspirational quality of Dybala’s heartfelt decision.
