Governor Diri Charges Super Falcons to Win 10th WAFCON Title

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri has urged Nigeria’s national women’s football team, the Super Falcons to return home victorious with the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) trophy as they head into their 10th final of the prestigious tournament.

The Super Falcons earned their spot in the final after a hard-fought 2-1 victory over South Africa in Tuesday’s semi-final clash in Casablanca, Morocco. This win propelled Nigeria to the final, where they will have the opportunity to extend their record with a 10th WAFCON title.

Governor Diri made the call on Thursday during the Weekly “Prosperity Walk” at the Samson Siasia Stadium in Yenagoa, where he expressed his full support for the team as they prepare for the final match.

“I commend our girls for their unwavering determination from the group stage all the way to the final,” Governor Diri said. “Their triumph against defending champions South Africa is a true reflection of their champion spirit. The Bayelsa State Government stands solidly behind them, and we are confident they will return with the trophy.”

He praised the team’s resilience, highlighting the victories over Zambia and South Africa as key milestones that have rekindled the hopes of millions of Nigerians. Governor Diri referred to the final match as “Mission X”, a reference to the team’s quest for their 10th continental title.

“I would like to take this opportunity to wish our girls the best of luck in Morocco,” Governor Diri continued. “They’ve done it again and again, winning the title nine times. Now, it’s time to add the 10th. The people of Bayelsa and the Government of Bayelsa are behind them every step of the way.”

With the final against Morocco on the horizon, the Super Falcons have their eyes set on making history with a 10th WAFCON title, a feat that would further cement their legacy as one of Africa’s most successful national teams.
