Granit Xhaka urges Nigerians to stay calm with Victor Boniface

By Monsurah Olatunji

Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Granit Xhaka has voiced his support for his teammate Victor Boniface, urging Nigerians to remain patient as the young striker continues to adjust to international football.

Boniface, who has been in exceptional form for Leverkusen, is struggling to replicate his club success with the Super Eagles.

Despite scoring eight goals in 15 Bundesliga matches this season, Boniface has yet to find the back of the net for Nigeria in 11 appearances since making his debut in 2023.

Currently recovering from an injury sustained during international duty, the 23-year-old has faced criticism for his performances with the national team, with many fans expecting him to mirror his prolific club form on the international stage.

However, Xhaka, who plays alongside Boniface at Leverkusen, is confident that the striker has what it takes to succeed with the Super Eagles in the future.

“It’s always difficult because you don’t have a lot of time to adapt, and you don’t get enough time to work on the tactical setup every day with the same coach and the same players,” Xhaka told OmaSports TV.

“But everyone wants to play for their country. He’s important for us, and for sure, he’ll be important for Nigeria in the future. Stay calm because he’s a great guy and a great footballer.”

Xhaka’s words serve as a reminder that adapting to international football can take time, and that Boniface’s potential is undeniable.

With patience and continued development, Xhaka believes Boniface will shine for the Super Eagles in the years to come.
