Hakimi and Chebbak shine as Morocco celebrates historic night at 2025 CAF Awards
By Samuel Ahmadu
Morocco marked a landmark evening at the 2025 CAF Awards, cementing its position as a continental football powerhouse with a series of historic achievements.
Achraf Hakimi (Paris Saint-Germain & Morocco) was named Men’s Player of the Year, becoming the first defender ever to claim the award and ending a 27-year wait for Morocco to lift the prestigious men’s top player gong.
His triumph reflects not only his personal talent but also Morocco’s growing influence on the global stage.
On the women’s side, Ghizlaine Chebbak (Al-Hilal & Morocco) became the first Moroccan female player to be crowned Women’s Player of the Year, completing a historic North African double alongside Hakimi’s win. These milestones stress the remarkable progress of both men’s and women’s football in the region.
Moroccan goalkeepers also shone. Yassine Bonou (Al-Hilal & Morocco) was named Men’s Goalkeeper of the Year, while rising stars Othmane Maamma (Watford & Morocco) and Doha El Madani (AS FAR & Morocco) were recognized as Men’s Young Player of the Year and Women’s Young Player of the Year, respectively.
The Morocco Under-20 team capped an extraordinary year by winning the U-20 World Cup in Chile, becoming only the second African team after Ghana in 2009 to lift the trophy.
Their triumph also earned them Men’s National Team of the Year, reflecting Morocco’s systematic investment in youth development and long-term footballing excellence.
These historic achievements are rooted in years of strategic planning, investment, and visionary leadership. Under the guidance of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, Moroccan football has undergone significant transformation both on and off the pitch.
The King’s sustained support has fueled infrastructure development, including world-class training facilities, stadium renovations, and elite academies for young players. These investments have strengthened grassroots programs, professional leagues, and women’s football, enabling Morocco to produce world-class talent at all levels.
The Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) has also played a pivotal role, implementing structured coaching programs, international collaborations, and youth scouting networks.
By prioritizing education, professional development, and athlete welfare, the FRMF has ensured Moroccan footballers are equipped to compete and excel on the global stage.
This CAF Awards night is not just a celebration of individual brilliance—it is a reflection of Morocco’s long-term vision, strategic investments, and commitment to elevating football across the nation.
From historic personal accolades to global team triumphs, Morocco’s rise embodies the perfect synergy of talent, governance, and visionary leadership.
