By Monsurah Olatunji
Nigeria midfielder Halimatu Ayinde has been rewarded for her masterclass defensive warship on Lauren James at the just concluded 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
The Nigerian is the only African to make the list for the team of the tournament as compiled by reputable UK media outlet, The Sun.
Despite missing the opening match due to a red card received against Morocco at the 2022 Women’s African Cup of Nations (WAFCON), Ayinde was spectacular throughout the tournament, especially in Nigeria’s last-16 clash against England which the Super Falcons lost on penalties.
She made her return for Nigeria’s other games after Deborah Abiodun was suspended because of a red card in the first game.
The 28-year-old did a woman-marking job on England and Chelsea star Lauren James, neutralizing her efforts at every turn.
Spain won the FIFA Women’s World Cup after a spectacular run to the final that saw them defeat England 1-0 to wrap up a thrilling tournament.
