Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team’s top goal scorer from the qualifiers for the 2024 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, Chidi Harmony, is over the moon after scoring her first goal at the prestigious tournament.

The Imo Striker Queens forward found the back of the net in Nigeria’s 4-0 victory over Ecuador, extending the Flamingos’ perfect start to the competition.

Harmony, who did not score in Nigeria’s 4-1 win over New Zealand in their group opener, shone against Ecuador with both a goal and an assist, further solidifying her crucial role in the squad.

Her goal, which came as Nigeria’s second of the match, played a pivotal part in their comprehensive win.

“I am the happiest person on earth. This is a dream come true,” Harmony exclaimed after the match.

“I am very happy and I bless God for it because it’s not by my strength. I couldn’t have done this without the support of my teammates, my coaches, and my faith in God.”

Harmony, who emerged as the joint top scorer in last season’s Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Championship, has been a key figure for Nigeria throughout the qualifiers.

Despite her individual success, she remains humble, expressing gratitude for the collective efforts of her team and coaching staff.

“I don’t believe I would be the player of the match or the highest goal scorer in the qualifiers without my teammates and coaches,” she added.

“Even when it seemed like things weren’t working, my coach and fellow players always encouraged me, giving me the confidence to push forward.”

The teenage striker is clearly embracing her moment, adding, “I don’t know how to express it because I’m overwhelmed with joy. I thank my fans, and I believe that together with my teammates, we will make this journey count for you all.”

Looking ahead, Harmony is eager to add to her tally when the Flamingos face hosts Dominican Republic in their final group match.

With two wins from two games, the Flamingos are in strong position to advance to the knockout stages and continue their pursuit of World Cup glory.
