“He is just a captain” – Brown Ideye questions Troost-Ekong’s leadership skills

By Monsurah Olatunji

Former Nigeria international, Brown Ideye has questioned the leadership skills of William Troost-Ekong who captained the team at the 2023 Africa Cup Of Nations (AFCON).

The former West Bromwich Albion star believes the current Super Eagles lack real leadership that will help propel the team to a higher level as the 35-year-old pointed out that players like Ahmed Musa, whom he won the 2013 Afcon are the type of leaders the team needs.

Ideye made this known in an X-space conversation hosted by The Naija Football Conference, while addressing the controversy surrounding the social media rant by Victor Osimhen about FInidi George.

Ideye emphasised that Troost-Ekong is powerless over key Super Eagles players like Samuel Chukwueze, Ademola Lookman, and Victor Osimhen, stressing that the national team had Vincent Enyeama and Joseph Yobo who were leaders in the team during his playing days.

“A leader has to be someone who has been in that team for years and years. In the present Super Eagles, we don’t have those players like Enyeama and Yobo anymore,” Ideye stated.

“Who do you want to give a leader, Ekong? It’s not about having the captain’s armband. Can Ekong sit Osimhen, Chukwueze, and Lookman down and speak to them? No.

“I don’t see Osimhen sitting down with Ekong and hearing everything he has to say without saying something back.”
