Former Super Eagles captain John Obi Mikel has lauded the coaching abilities of Augustine Eguavoen, drawing a notable comparison between Eguavoen and renowned coach Carlo Ancelotti.
Mikel, who was first introduced to national team football by Eguavoen, praised the interim coach’s man-management skills and overall professionalism.
Eguavoen initially gave Mikel his first opportunity with Nigeria’s U-17 squad in 2003.
Under Eguavoen’s guidance, Mikel was subsequently promoted to the U-20 team and later made his senior debut in 2005. Eguavoen’s leadership was instrumental as the Super Eagles secured a third-place finish at the 2006 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Egypt.
In a recent interview on the Obi One Podcast, Mikel reflected on Eguavoen’s impact, noting how the coach’s style reminds him of Ancelotti, who managed him during his time at Chelsea.
Mikel praised Eguavoen’s approach, stating, “He reminds me so much of Carlo Ancelotti. His man-management is top. He speaks to players really well, is so humble, and communicates effectively. He gets his players on his side, which is so important.”
Mikel acknowledged the challenge Eguavoen faced coming in on short notice and commended his ability to get the team to perform well.
“You can’t teach them so much in such a short space of time, but you could see the results,” Mikel added.
Eguavoen’s interim role has been marked by impressive performances from the Super Eagles, further highlighting his coaching acumen and the high regard in which he is held by former players like Mikel.
