Holyfield Ogbu Emerges Champion at First-Ever MSL Sports Quiz

The maiden edition of the MSL Sports Quiz concluded in grand style at Central Park, Abuja on Saturday, October 12, 2024, with Holyfield Ogbu emerging as the inaugural champion. Ogbu, who scored 30 points, walked away with the grand prize of ₦250,000.
In a closely contested event, Michael Akinrata secured the 1st runners-up position with 20 points, earning ₦150,000, while Ikwulono Isreal placed 2nd runners-up with 10 points, receiving ₦100,000. The fourth to seventh place participants were also rewarded with consolation prizes.
The quiz was skillfully anchored by Kelechi Onwudiwe, veteran broadcaster and chairman of the FCT chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), adding a professional touch to the event.
Reflecting on his victory, Ogbu expressed his joy and gratitude: “I feel very happy. I want to thank everyone who supported me and MSL Sports Quiz for this opportunity. I never expected to come this far, but I’m glad I participated. I know a lot about LaLiga because I’m a Barcelona fan, so it was a surprise that I answered Premier League questions too. My love for Messi and Barça has always kept me following football, and I hope there will be more competitions like this. To those who think it’s a fluke, never give up on what you love!”
The event, designed to test participants’ knowledge of football and other sports, saw intense competition as quiz enthusiasts showcased their expertise.
Mankind Ndukwe, founder of the MSL Sports Quiz, shared the inspiration behind the initiative and expressed his excitement at the event’s success.
“It comes a very long way. It started back in 2020/2021 when I saw people arguing about football and fighting for something they don’t know much about. That’s when I thought, why not set up something like this where they can argue and get rewarded? Instead of arguing for nothing, we built a team, developed an app, and launched the live show so people can benefit from football—a sport that brings people together globally. This quiz allows people who really know their football to put their knowledge into good use.”
He also reflected on the turnout and looked forward to future editions: “It was awesome because initially, when we started, I saw no one here, and I was wondering if people didn’t like football. But as time went on, the turnout surprised me, and that gave me more encouragement to work harder. We will have Season Two, and I can assure you it’s coming soon. We are even thinking of increasing the prize for the next edition—hopefully, the winner will go home with ₦1 million. Seeing the participants smiling made me happy. Some came without the hope of winning anything, but they left with something.”
“I just want the participants to let people know we are not fake. MSL Sports Quiz has come to stay. We are going to break boundaries in the world of sports quizzes and fight to make our quiz the number one football quiz in the country. Everyone is welcome for the second edition.”
The MSL Sports Quiz aims to continue inspiring young sports lovers to showcase their talents and deepen their knowledge in future editions.
