House of Rep committee boss kicks against Nigeria bid for 2027 Africa Cup of Nations
By Wale Mustapha
Honorable Abubakar Ekene Adams, a member of House of Representatives has expressed displeasure with Nigeria’s quest to host the 2027 African Cup of Nations, AFCON.
Nigeria have submitted a joint-bid with Benin Republic for the 2027 AFCON before the Confederation of African Football, (CAF) and the Chairman House Committee on Sports boss insists the current economic hardship faced by Nigerians owing to subsidy removal should be a major focus of Federal Government and not hosting tournaments.
“Federal Government and State Governments should at this time be concerned with how to alleviate the suffering of the citizens,” the former Remo Stars general manager told media.
“We all know that the Federal Government and State Governments have distributed palliatives to Nigerians but it seemed not enough and need to come up with different programmes to alleviate the suffering of Nigerians.
“At this time, the priority of government should be about the welfarism of the citizens. Hosting the African Nations Cup is good but it is better that such billion of naira that will be spent on hosting be diverted into the economy.”
If they win the bid, it will be third time they will be hosting the continent’s biggest football showpiece haven previously hosted it in 1980 and in 2000 which they co-hosted with Ghana.
CAF are expected to announce the winners of both 2025 and 2027 hosts of the tournament on Wednesday in Egypt.
All countries who submitted bids to host the AFCON tournament in 2025 and 2027 respectively are also attending the meeting.
