Hugo Broos: Bafana coach reflects on AFCON loss ahead of another Super Eagles clash

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

The head coach of South Africa’s senior men’s national team, Hugo Broos has reiterated his target of four points in the next two 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifier matches against Nigeria and Zimbabwe.

The first game is slated for Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State capital on Friday.

Ahead of this match, both sides previously met in the semi-final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) where the Super Eagles edged the South African side on penalties.

Broos who believed his side were not lucky at the AFCON stated his target for both games.

“The qualifiers for the World Cup, everybody knows that every one of us wants to go and qualify for the World Cup in 2026 but we are in front of two very tough games,” Broos said as captured by SABC Sports.

“First of all Nigeria. AFCON finalist with players who are playing in the best competition in Europe.”

With the Super Eagles having a superior head-to-head advantage over Bafana Bafana, Broos believed his side were the best at AFCON and intends to prove that on Friday.

“On the other side, we saw what we can do against them at the AFCON.” He continued.

“I feel we didn’t have luck on our side and should have been in the final and not Nigeria.

“I think we were the best team in the semi-final. We could have won that.” He concluded.

With three points, South Africa occupy the second position in the group, a point ahead of Nigeria.
