Nigeria captain, Ahmed Musa says he is not ready to retire from the senior national team.
With 107 appearances for Super Eagles, Musa is the nation’s record most-capped player ahead of Joseph Yobo and Vincent Enyeama and the former Al Nasr and Leicester City player insists he will retire when the time is right.
“Why are you not asking Musa to retire when I was doing well? Definitely, we know our country. No matter whoever the coach invite, they will talk. I don’t have to listen to anyone,” Musa told media.
“I am the one doing my job. If my body wants me to stop, I stop playing. I am always playing at my club and have a good contract so why do I need to retire from the national team? If the coach doesn’t invite me anymore, that’s fine.
But if the coach always invites me, then I will always honour it.
“Anytime I decide to retire and feel like not playing anymore, I can do that on my own. I don’t listen to anyone. This is what I am playing and love how to play. Anytime I come to the national team, I always give my best since day one.”
Musa became the first Nigerian to score more than once in a FIFA World Cup match, after scoring twice against Argentina in the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
He is also the first Nigerian to score in two FIFA World Cup competitions, after scoring twice against Iceland in the group stage of the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
