“I still believe we did our best” – Aweroro assesses Ikorodu City after Remo Stars draw

By Wale Mustapha

Ikorodu City’s head coach, Nurudeen Aweroro, expressed satisfaction with his team’s response following their 1-1 draw against Remo Stars in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Southwest derby on Sunday.

In their inaugural derby, the Oga Boys came from behind late in the match to share the spoils with the Sky Blues Stars at the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos. Ibrahim Shuaibu had given Remo Stars an early lead, but Chineme Chinonso’s 82nd-minute strike earned a hard-fought point for Ikorodu City.

Aweroro acknowledged that while his team showed resilience, they could have secured all three points, had it not been for a momentary lapse in concentration. He promised to address this issue moving forward.

“It didn’t work out as planned for us, but I still believe we did our best,” Aweroro said in his post-match comments. “This game has made me understand that we still need to work harder if we want to remain in the league next season.”

The coach identified the loss of concentration as the team’s major issue during the match, which cost them vital points. “We lost concentration and paid for it. We were supposed to concentrate from the beginning of the game to the end against a team like this.”

He went on to emphasize the importance of maintaining focus throughout the match: “Losing our concentration against a team like this became a big problem for us and we paid for it.”

Following the draw, Ikorodu City have dropped to fifth place in the NPFL standings, while Remo Stars have climbed to second place after the Matchday 17 encounter.
