Ibukun Akinfenwa Gears Up for Primeiro D’Agosto’s Angolan Title Defense

Primeiro D’Agosto, the current leaders of the Angolan Girabola league, are set to receive a significant boost with the return of playmaker Ibukun Akinfenwa, hailed as the best foreign player in Angola during the previous season. Akinfenwa, affectionately known as “Ibukun,” has overcome a five-month spell of injuries and has been declared fully fit by the team’s medical staff, just as the league enters its crucial final phase.

In an exclusive interview with completesportsnigeria.com, Ibukun expressed his eagerness to contribute to the team’s pursuit of retaining the league title, stating, “I feel brand new and I can’t wait to help my teammates achieve our goal, which is to retain the league title.”

Currently, Primeiro D’Agosto leads the league standings with 47 points from 21 games, holding a three-point advantage over second-placed Petro Luanda, who have two games in hand.

Ibukun’s aspirations extend beyond the league title, as he envisions success in cup competitions as well. “Apart from defending our league title, we also want to go as far as possible in the cup games. We have the talent and team spirit to do that,” he affirmed.

Additionally, Primeiro D’Agosto is poised for a quarterfinal clash against Girabola counterpart Academica de Libolo in the Angolan Cup.

Looking ahead, Ibukun is determined to see his team perform well on the continental stage, aiming to bounce back stronger in the CAF Champions League next season after a first-round exit this year.

With the Girabola resuming after a two-week recess, Ibukun’s return adds a significant boost to Primeiro D’Agosto’s bid for a successful title defense.
