Joan Laporta says Barcelona must accept their “harsh blow” against Real Madrid but insists the club’s ambitions remain unchanged, while describing Hansi Flick as the “ideal” manager for the club.

Barcelona’s president was speaking to Movistar during the Ballon d’Or awards ceremony after his side’s defeat by Real Madrid in the Spanish league’s latest El Clasico.

“It was a harsh blow for the fans, but the manager already knows what happened,” Laporta said. “We were unable to play our usual style and we have to accept that. Real Madrid are extremely dangerous on the counter-attack.

“Even so, we are still top and we know this is a long race. Our ambitions have not changed.”

Laporta offered his full backing to Flick, who was appointed to lead Barcelona and has adopted a more direct approach to their football.

“He is the ideal manager for Barcelona,” Laporta said. “He understands our system and is a great admirer of Johan Cruyff. That is why we chose him, although every manager has their own stamp.

“Flick prefers vertical football and we enjoy that style a lot. The results speak for themselves.”

Laporta said Barcelona’s priorities were to retain their Spanish league challenge and end their wait for success in the Champions League.

“Our aim is to win La Liga and, with humility, to fight for the Champions League, a competition that has eluded us,” he added.

“Hansi knows what Barcelona supporters like. It is a style based on three pillars: possession, positioning and pressing. We also rely on the offside trap, which is producing good results, although it can make us suffer.”

Barcelona remain listed for a La Liga fixture against Deportivo Alaves on 31 October 2026. Racing Santander are listed to face Real Madrid in La Liga on 01 November 2026.

Before the winner of the Ballon d’Or was announced, Laporta also expressed his belief that Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal deserved to claim the award.

“We believe he deserves it,” Laporta said. “If you look at the names on the shortlist, there are three, I think Lamine deserves to win because of his talent and the trophies he has achieved.

“He is extremely excited.”
