Joel Obi Secures Victory for Torino with Debut Goal, Nigerian Stars Shine Abroad

In a spectacular display of skill and determination, Nigerian midfielder Joel Obi etched his name into the annals of Serie A history on Sunday, delivering a commanding performance and scoring a sublime goal to help Torino secure a resounding 3-0 victory over Sassuolo. Obi, who was making only his second appearance of the season, showcased his football prowess in the 88th minute, sealing a triumph that left fans in awe at the Stadio Olimpico Grande Torino.

The Torino victory was ignited by Andrea Belotti, who broke the deadlock in the 44th minute, unleashing a goal that set the stage for the remarkable win. Adem Ljajic extended the lead further in the 84th minute, ensuring Torino’s dominance in the match. Obi’s compatriot, Umar Sadiq, watched from the bench as an unused substitute, waiting for his opportunity to shine in the Serie A.

Across the Belgian top flight, Uche Agbo, a Super Eagles invitee, displayed his prowess on the field as he played the full 90 minutes for Standard Liege. Unfortunately, his efforts were in vain as Club Brugge triumphed with a commanding 4-0 victory. Agbo, who was initially on standby for the Super Eagles during the 2018 World Cup qualifier against Cameroon, has now received an official call-up to join the national team in Uyo.

In another Belgian clash, Nigerian duo Moses Simon and Anderson Esiti put up a strong performance for Gent, securing a 0-0 draw against Anderlecht, who featured the talented Henry Onyekuru. Simon and Esiti, in their third and fourth appearances, respectively, demonstrated resilience on the field. However, it was Onyekuru’s fourth appearance without a goal to his name this season.

Over in the Russian top division, Aaron Samuel, who is also set to join the Super Eagles in Uyo, watched from the bench as CSKA Moscow succumbed to a 1-0 home defeat to FK Akhmat. Samuel has made five league appearances this season, managing to net one goal.

Meanwhile, Enugu Rangers’ on-loan striker Chisom Egbuchulam, who had recently stunned fans with a hat-trick in Hacken’s 9-1 Swedish Cup win, couldn’t replicate his heroics as he fired blanks in their 3-1 home win against Joenkoepings. Egbuchulam, brought on with just four minutes left, is still in search of his first league goal after 10 appearances.

Finally, in the Scottish Premiership, Efe Ambrose, a name well-known to fans, was introduced in the 46th minute during Hibernian’s 1-1 away draw against Dundee United. Ambrose, making his fourth consecutive appearance for Hibernian, continued to be a valuable asset for his team in the league.
