By Saheed Afolabi
Former Nigeria international John Obi Mikel has backed the national team to win the 2024 Africa Cup Of Nations (AFCON).
The Super Eagles have won the African crown thrice, with the most recent happening 10 years ago at the 2013 Afcon in South Africa, where Mikel captained the team to glory in Soweto.
The former Chelsea player believes the Super Eagles are prime favorite to win the continental tournament despite opposition from some African countries or quarters, stressing that it will be a landmark achievement for the players to win the AFCON again.
“Nigeria remained a favorite anytime we went to the tournament, everyone knows that but maybe we are not a massive favorite this time,” Obi told CAF.
“If we can do it again, it will be a massive achievement for us, which is what the country needs for now.
“We need to get our football back to where it should and by winning this tournament, our football will go back to where it should be.”
The Super Eagles are stationed in group A of the AFCON with Equatorial Guinea, Guinea Bissau and Ivory Coast.
