John Obi Mikel shuns possible Super Eagles coaching job

By Monsurah Olatunji
Former Chelsea midfielder, Mikel John Obi, has revealed he has no plans to take up a coaching role with the Nigeria national team.
The ex-Super Eagles captain enjoyed an illustrious playing career winning the English Premier League twice, UEFA Champions League, and the UEFA Europa League. He is also a four-time FA Cup winner.
The 2013 Africa Cup of Nations winner has been in vocal support and admiration of the Super Eagles ahead of the 2023 Afcon but is not keen about accepting a coaching role in the future.
The 36-year-old made sure he passed his point across, citing that success on the football pitch doesn’t start on the field, but behind the scenes, and that’ll be his preferred work area.
“I would love to get involved with the Super Eagles, but not as a manager,” he told CNN.
“I don’t want to get sacked, and I don’t think I can handle that very well. I want to be involved with the national team as someone trying to fix the problems from the top.
“If it means to be a mediator between the players and the NFF to make sure things are run properly and have the right people managing what we should do together to make sure that we succeed.
“Success doesn’t happen only on the pitch but from the top. So for me, that’s where we should start.”
