Jose Peseiro provides updates on Nigeria defender Kevin Akpoguma injury

Head Coach of Nigeria’s senior men’s national team, Jose Peseiro has revealed the severity of Kevin Akpoguma’s injury he sustained against Guinea-Bissau in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying meeting in Abuja on Friday.

Akpoguma sustained head injury in the 1-0 loss to the Wild Dogs when goalscorer, Mama Balde clashed with him on the head in a contest and the Hoffenheim centre back could not continue the encounter as he was later replaced by Semi Ajayi.

Asked about the extent of the Akpoguma’s injury, Peseiro admits that it’s not as serious as earlier thought but couldn’t assure if the defender will be available for the return leg in Bissau.

“I spoke with the Doctor, he told me the injury is not a threat, not much of a problem, he only feel some pain in his head,” the Portuguese told media.

“But I think it was a serious challenge on him, which I think it should be a red card for Balde but referee only gave him a yellow card, its unfortunate but Kevin will be back soon.”
