Josephine Matthias: Nasarawa Amazons captain reacts to season’s performance amidst preparation to face Cameroon

It has been a rewarding season for Josephine Matthias both at club and national team.

The Nasarawa Amazons captain led the team to second place at the end of the 2024/25 Nigeria Women Football League NWFL Premiership narrowly losing the title to Bayelsa Queens.

After making her national team debut against Algeria last year, she is back in the Super Falcons fold for their friendly match against Cameroon.

“I feel very good because that was my first experience with the senior national team and I am very grateful to God for everything,” Mathias told www.nigeriafootball.ng

“I feel very happy because that is my desire and where I was to see myself as a footballer. You always dream to go higher. I appreciate God for that and happy for the call up.

“It’s not a new thing for some of us because we have been there before. My club teammates feel very happy for me. When I get there, I feel very happy because it is like a home to me. We celebrate and everyone get happy when we are in training, the way we play and do things, they know I am back.”

Narrowly missing out of the league title was a bitter pill for Mathias and her teammates to swallow after a 0-0 draw with Edo Queens.

The team bounced back with a 2-0 win over the same opponents in the President Federation Cup semi finals and now have the chance to end the season on a high against Rivers Angels in the grand finale.

“It’s God that gives everything. Maybe God don’t wants us to win the league last season because as a player, you definitely feel bad but I am grateful to God for everything. The way we are ending the campaign,” She continued.

“Beating Edo Queens in the semi final of the President Federation Cup. We knew that we can’t lose to a team two times. We just have to keep on working and put in our best. We feel very happy to beat them in the semi-final. It’s our prestige to do it. We are preparing for the final. God help us, we are going to do better in the final.” She concluded.

Winning the President Federation Cup title will put the Solid Babes in good stead ahead of their quest to win the league title next season.
