Josh King has urged Fulham to keep Alex Iwobi as their penalty taker after the Nigeria international converted from the spot in their pre-season draw with Farense in Portugal.

Iwobi’s second-half penalty restored parity after Farense had taken the lead before half-time, ensuring Fulham ended their pre-season camp on level terms.

The former Arsenal midfielder remained composed in a key moment, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way with a confidently taken spot-kick. His finish prompted praise from King, who believes Iwobi should continue taking penalties when the new campaign begins.

“Very good. Alex Iwobi is behind the cameras. It is a great penalty and hopefully he stays on penalties and gets a few more goals,” King told theclub’s website.

King also spoke positively about his growing relationship with Iwobi on the pitch. The youngster said he had enjoyed combining with the midfielder during Fulham’s pre-season preparations and hopes their understanding can develop further during the 2026/27 season.

“It’s been nice to play with him and combine and stuff and hopefully we take it into the season,” he added.

Iwobi will now be looking to carry his encouraging pre-season form into Fulham’s Premier League campaign. The Cottagers begin the 2026/27 season against Chelsea, with the Nigeria international hoping his goal against Farense can provide momentum ahead of the opening fixture.

The penalty was one of the key moments in Fulham’s final pre-season match at their camp in Portugal. Farense had gone ahead before the interval, but Iwobi’s calm response gave Fulham a way back into the contest.

For King, the goal was significant not only because it brought Fulham level, but also because it strengthened his belief that Iwobi can take responsibility from the penalty spot throughout the season. His comments also highlighted the positive connection the pair have established during the build-up to the new campaign.

Iwobi’s ability to contribute in front of goal will be important as Fulham prepare for the Premier League. The midfielder will be eager to continue scoring, while King hopes the combination they have developed in pre-season can translate into competitive matches.

Fulham’s meeting with Chelsea will provide the first chance to see whether the team can carry that preparation into the new season, and whether Iwobi remains the club’s preferred penalty taker.
