By Monsurah Olatunji
Nigerian striker Josh Maja netted the second goal as Girondins Bordeaux claim a 2-0 victory over Portuguese club Boavista 2-0 in a club friendly encounter at Complexo Desportivo de VRSA in Portugal on Friday.
Maja continued his rich vein of goalscoring form after scoring in Bordeaux’s 2-1 win against Brentford six days ago in a friendly match.
The former Sunderland striker scored in the 63rd minute to make it 2-0 after Zuriko Davitashvili had opened the scoring for the French club in the first half.
With seven goals in 15 league games, Maja is joint third in the top scorers’ chart in the French second-tier division.
Bordeaux, on 28 points, are second behind leaders Le Havre (32 points) after 15 games in the 20-team league.
As it stands, Bordeaux will automatically gain promotion to Ligue 1 should they end the current campaign in their current place with the top two sides destined for topflight progression.
They will aim to maintain their fine run this season as league actions resume on boxing day December 26, 2022, when they face Le Havre.
On international scene, Maja made his senior international debut for Nigeria on 10 September, 2022 in a 2–2 friendly against Ukraine, replacing Victor Osimhen in added time.
