Katsina United players stage protest over five months unpaid salaries

Training disrupted as players block team bus; officials forced to improvise transportation.

Katsina United were thrown into disarray on Monday after several first-team players staged a protest over the non-payment of their salaries for the past five months, a situation that has created growing tension within the squad.

According to sources at the club, the players gathered at the team’s camp early in the morning and blocked the team bus from leaving for their scheduled training session. The protest, described as peaceful but firm, was aimed at drawing attention to what they called “unbearable financial hardship” caused by the prolonged delay in payments.

The standoff left club officials scrambling for alternatives. With the primary team bus immobilised, the officials were forced to convey the remaining willing players to the stadium in another vehicle, resulting in a disrupted and incomplete training session.

Players involved in the protest expressed frustration at the club’s continued failure to meet its financial obligations. Several members of the squad are said to be struggling with basic living expenses, with some players reportedly relying on personal loans and support from friends to sustain themselves.

This is not the first time Katsina United have faced financial difficulties, but insiders say the current situation has reached a critical point. The five-month backlog covers both salaries and some match bonuses, deepening the players’ grievances.

Club management has yet to release an official statement addressing Monday’s incident, but team sources suggest that discussions are ongoing between the players’ representatives and the board in an effort to resolve the crisis.

The protest raises fresh concerns about the financial stability of several teams across the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), where delays in salary payment remain an all-too-common challenge despite ongoing reforms.

For now, Katsina United will hope the situation does not affect team morale and on-field performances as they continue their league campaign amid uncertainty.
