Leicester City star Plumptre relishing Kerr challenge in Women’s World Cup after WSL tests

By Monsurah Olatunji

Nigeria international Ashleigh Plumptre is looking forward to playing against Chelsea and Australia striker Samantha Kerr at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup this summer.
The British-born Nigerian center-back will face off with Kerr after the Super Falcons were drawn into the same group as Australia which would alongside New Zealand, co-host the ninth edition of the Women’s World Cup.
In December, Kerr was on target as Chelsea thrashed Leicester City 8-0 and both players will meet again on Wednesday at Kingsmeadow for the reverse Women’s Super League fixture.
While the 24-year-old savours the prospect of playing against the best players in the world, the Super Falcons star is determined to stop her Aussies superstar when they face off in their group meetings at the Women’s World Cup.

“Playing against Sam Kerr in the past (in the WSL), I was like ‘this is one of the best players I would play against,” Plumptre told Optus Sports
“As a professional player, you’d want to play against the best, and you’d want to be with and against the best to test yourself. Pressure is probably more on Australia, than Nigeria.”
Super Falcons will first tackle Olympic champions Canada, before taking on Australia six days later and will wrap up their group campaign with a game against the Republic of Ireland on July 31.
