Leicester City’s Iheanacho Shines as Caretaker Manager Appleton Commends Striker’s Seizing of Opportunity

Leicester City’s caretaker manager, Michael Appleton, expressed satisfaction with the stellar performance of Nigerian striker Kelechi Iheanacho during their 3-1 victory over Leeds United in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night. In a noteworthy display, Iheanacho not only scored his first goal for the Foxes since joining them in the summer but also played a pivotal role in setting up the second goal, propelling Leicester City into the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup.

Iheanacho, making only his third start for Leicester in all competitions as Jamie Vardy was rested, demonstrated his prowess by curling a left-footed shot into the far corner, equalizing just three minutes after Pablo Hernandez had given the hosts the lead. Additional goals from Algerian duo Islam Slimani and Riyad Mahrez secured the triumph.

Reflecting on the match, Appleton, who assumed the managerial role after the departure of Craig Shakespeare, spoke to the BBC, stating, “It was not ideal going behind, but to come back and play as well as we did was pleasing. It was great for Kelechi Iheanacho to produce what he did. It has been stop-start for him, but he’s grabbed his opportunity.”

Appleton emphasized the significance of progressing to the quarter-finals, acknowledging that while there is a long journey ahead in the competition, the focus remains on upcoming fixtures. Leicester City supporters can anticipate further impactful contributions from Iheanacho as he continues to make the most of his opportunities on the field.
