Maduka Okoye happy to be back in Nigeria squad for South Africa and Benin duels

By Monsurah Olatunji

Maduka Okoye has expressed his delight upon his recall to the Nigeria national team, having been named by Finidi George in the 23-man squad to face South Africa and Benin in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

The Udinese goalkeeper has not received a call-up since last October when he was invited for the international friendlies against Saudi Arabia and Mozambique, where he remained an unused substitute.

Okoye has not played for the three-time African champions since making a costly error in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations round of 16 clash against Tunisia, although he has been included in the matchday squad on three occasions since that incident.

However, the 24-year-old has shown impressive form since moving to Serie A, featuring in 22 games across all competitions for Udinese and keeping five clean sheets.

The former Watford shot-stopper has been instrumental in helping Udinese maintain their Serie A status with his brilliant performances in goal.

According to Udinese’s official website, Okoye stated, “I am very happy to return to the national team. It is a great honour for me and my family to play for Nigeria. But in the meantime, Alé Udin!”

The Super Eagles will host Bafana Bafana at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on Friday, June 7.
